Mercedes-Benz has introduced its most potent SL ever. The new Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E Performance pairs its V8 engine with a plug-in hybrid setup.
The SL63 S E Performance packs a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that makes 612 hp. The plug-in hybrid system comprising of an electric motor and a 400-volt, 6.1 kWh battery pack delivers an additional 204 hp. The combined torque provided by the powertrain is a massive 1,047 lb-ft!
Mercedes claims the convertible can sprint from 0-62 mph in just 2.9 seconds and will reach a top speed of 197 mph.
The SL 63 S E Performance is equipped with the AMG Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system, which is crucial in order to transfer all that torque onto the tarmac. The car also gets rear-axle steering, AMG Active Ride Control with semi-active roll stabilization and a regenerative braking system.
Mercedes has also tweaked the SL’s active aero package on the plug-in hybrid version. Braking is handled by ceramic composite discs. These include 420 mm rotors at the front and 380 mm at the rear. The car rides on 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels.
