V8 Mercedes-AMG C63 & E63 could make a return by 2026
Enthusiasts across the world were left dumbfounded when Mercedes-AMG announced that it was replacing the V8 with 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder hybrids in its C63 and E63 models. However, as per the latest reports, the good-old V8 could be back as early as 2026.
Mercedes-AMG C63 competes with the BMW M3 that uses a twin-turbo inline-6. While the C63 packs more power, it weighs over 2 tonnes, which negates its advantage over the M3.
The current Mercedes-AMG E63 S is also likely to swap its twin-turbo V8 for a 6-pot hybrid setup. The new engine is said to develop around 700 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque, which is substantially higher than the 604 hp V8. However, it has been reported that Mercedes might plonk the tried-and-tested M177 V8 back in the car instead. The C63 could get the same engine.
The M177 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 is currently offered in the AMG GT63 S E Performance and AMG S63. Both cars get a hybrid setup with a peak output of 831 hp and 791 hp, respectively.
