The Maserati MC20 was supposed to be an Alfa Romeo supercar

Last month, Alfa Romeo took the covers off its latest supercar, the 33 Stradale. As you may be aware, the new limited-edition supercar is a tribute to the Tipo 33 Stradale from 1967 and shares its underpinnings with the Maserati MC20.

In fact, the MC20 started out as an Alfa Romeo before becoming a Maserati production model. According to Daniel Guzzafame, “originally the project started intended for a supercar for Alfa, and then it was decided for a shift at the point of the development.”

“Within the company that moment was FCA. We had always in mind the possibility that in future Alfa could jump back from that in part, of course, not as a full programmer,” he added.

Guzzafame went on to state that the 33 Stradale’s front and rear suspension are specific to Alfa Romeo. The front H-frame and aluminium rear frame are also unique to this car. While the lower portion of the carbon fibre monocoque is shared with the Maserati MC20, the door opening mechanism is completely different.

The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale is available in two trims: Tributo and Alfa Corse. It is powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine that develops 620 hp and is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which drives the rear axle via an electronic limited-slip differential. Interestingly, the 33 Stradale is also available with an all-electric powertrain. The BEV setup generates over 750 hp and has a claimed range of 450 km (WLTP cycle).
