Porsche Carrera GT recalled over a suspension issue

Porsche has recalled its Carrera GT supercars manufactured between 2004 and 2005 over a suspension-related issue.

According to the company, the suspension joints on the Carrera GT could fail due to mechanical stress and corrosion. It is said that 489 out of the 1,300 cars in existence have been affected by this issue.

“It was recently determined that the spherical joints that connect the wishbone suspension components on the front and rear axles in the affected Carrera GT cars do not meet Porsche’s service life durability expectations,” the notification said. “The material used (X46Cr13) does not provide sufficient resistance to intergranular stress corrosion when exposed to salt and mechanical stress over the service life. This could result in cracks or fractures in the spherical joints, and possibly the wishbone.”

The carmaker added that owners would notice vibrations or noise from deteriorated joints before they fail. However, this may not provide sufficient warning of impending failure, and hence, has advised owners to bring their Carrera GTs in for inspection.
