Mercedes-AMG C63 and CLE 63 finally getting a V8 engine
Mercedes-AMG is dumping the 4-cylinder plug-in hybrid and is bringing back the V8 engine. According to media reports, Mercedes is developing a brand-new V8 mild-hybrid for the CLE 63, which will also power the revised C63 due in 2026.
The new engine is rumoured to adopt the existing 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 architecture. However, the cross-plane crankshaft may be replaced with a flat-plane design for a better throttle response. It will be a high-revving V8 that will be paired with a mild-hybrid system comprising an integrated starter motor.
You may be aware that Mercedes’ recent experiment with downsizing didn’t go as planned. The enthusiast community was absolutely livid with the decision to replace the V8 with a 4-cylinder hybrid, and that was reflected in the sales figures.
Mercedes seems to have finally realized its mistake, as two of its upcoming performance models are set to get V8 power once again.
Meanwhile, the guys at Vuk Automobile have already built a V8-powered Mercedes-AMG C63 W206.
