McLaren to launch first Hybrid Sports Series model in 2020

McLaren will soon offer a hybrid model in its entry-level Sports Series.

According to reports, McLaren is planning to launch a new hybrid supercar later this year. However, unlike the Speedtail, which sits at the top of its line-up, the new model will be positioned at the lower end.

“We have experience of hybrid systems with cars like the P1, P1 GTR and Speedtail, and that recipe of offering a car that can be both truly economical and thrilling to drive remains our goal,” McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said.

The new hybrid Sports Series is expected to be powered by a turbocharged V6 engine paired with a plug-in hybrid setup. As of now, we don’t have any information on the specifics of this powertrain. But, Flewitt said that it is expected to have an all-electric range of 20 miles. He also said that the engineers have been able to claw back the performance deficit that comes with a heavy hybrid system.

“McLaren is all about building the best driver’s cars, and we see opportunities with hybrid [powertrains], in terms of the instant torque and filling the gaps in the powerband,” Flewitt added.
