Koenigsegg Gemera’s Tourbillon Transmission is an engineering marvel

The Koenigsegg Gemera is now in its final phases of development and testing. The hypercar maker is currently building pre-production cars at its Gripen Atelier. In his latest video, CEO Christian von Koenigsegg shares the insane engineering that went into making the Light Speed Tourbillon Transmission (LSTT).

The Gemera ‘Mega GT’ features a rather unique powertrain. While it still has the twin-turbo V8 producing 1500 hp, an additional 800 hp electric motor, dubbed “Dark Matter” powers the front axle. This video, though, reveals more details of the Tourbillon transmission. It’s a re-engineered version of the Light Speed Transmission from the Jesko.

The Tourbillon transmission uses gear-train cassettes that wrap around the engine and provide drive to the rear wheels as well as a front-facing driveshaft. At its core, the LSTT is a 9-speed unit paired with an e-motor, which negates the need for a separate reverse gear or a starter motor.

This setup is said to be simpler and lighter than a regular LST. “We could not resist exploring the possibility of incorporating these remarkable features and benefits into the Gemera production model,” Christian explains.

The Dark Matter e-motor was also developed in-house. It is said to be the world’s most powerful 6-phase automotive-grade e-motor, which generates 922 lb-ft of torque.
