Junkyard find: Mercedes 300 SL Gullwing sells for $9.3 million!

A rare 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL ‘Alloy’ Gullwing was recently sold at auction for $9.3 million.

This 300 SL, part of the Rudi Klein Collection, went under the hammer this weekend in Los Angeles. It is said to be the 26th of 29 examples produced and the only “Alloy” Gullwing that had a black exterior and red interior. It was painted silver at some point during its lifetime. The car was acquired by Rudi Klein in August 1976.

This 300 SL Gullwing was delivered new to Luigi Chinetti, racing driver and winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in Italy. In 1976, Klein purchased the car for $30,000. It sat in the central building of the junkyard with 45,600 miles on the clock. It was never driven outside the yard for nearly 50 years.

Apart from the exterior colour, this Mercedes 300 SL Alloy Gullwing has all the original parts with matching-numbers engine, gearbox, rear axle, steering box, and front spindles.
