Ford Probe I Concept Car destroyed in a fire leaving Pebble Beach

The 1979 Ford Probe I concept car met its fiery end as it left the Pebble Beach Concours. The trailer in which the prototype was being transported caught fire, completely destroying it.

The Ford Probe I was built by Carrozzeria Ghia, and is one of several Probe concepts produced from 1970 through 1985. It was designed to showcase the advanced aerodynamic concepts of the day. The streamlined bodywork was designed to optimize fuel efficiency.

The Ford Probe I was based on a modified Fox platform and was powered by a 2.3-liter, 4-cylinder engine.

The Probe I was part of the Concours d’Elegance this year. The incident happened just a few hours after it was presented at the Pebble Beach lawns. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
