Guys at EVO Magazine had the chance to assemble a selection of European performance saloons for a 1000 meter drag race. Bruntingthrope was chosen to be the venue on a slightly moist British day. Three German cars against one plucky Brit- lined up at the start line with ‘Launch Control’ engaged. Now, before they set off, let’s pause for a moment and see what each of the contenders look like under the bonnet. The BMW M5 is a twin-turbocharged V-8 sedan with 560 horsepower. The Porsche Panamera S has a V-6 upfront and rear-wheel drive. The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and the Jaguar XFR are true rivals and could pose a challenge to the M5. So, we have all four super saloons with rear-wheel drive and unique launch control systems which all but negates the chance of wheel spin at launch.

Following are the specifications of each contender:

BMW M5

4.4 liter, twin-turbocharged V-8/ 560 hp @ 6000 rpm/ 500 lb-ft @ 1500 rpm

Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG

5.5 liter, twin-turbocharged V-8/ 550 hp @ 5500 rpm/ 531 lb-ft @ 1750 rpm

Jaguar XFR

5.0-liter Supercharged V-8/ 510 @ 6000 rpm/ 461 lb-ft @ 2500 rpm

Porsche Panamera S

3.0-liter V-6/ 420 hp @ 6000 rpm/ 384 lb-ft
