BMW M CEO : Next-gen M3 and M4 could go all electric
The BMW M3 and M4 are due replacement in 2027-2028 or thereabouts. Now, it seems that there is uncertainty around the powertrains of these future performance oriented cars. On one hand, it seems logical to go with conventional ICE engines, but with the way BMW is expanding its all-electric line-up, it is not too far-fetched to expect all-electric BMW M3 and M4.
Electric BMW M3 and M4 are a possibility
According to BMW M’s CEO Frank van Meel, all-electric versions of the aforementioned cars are possible only if they can beat their ICE counterparts significantly. And while electric cars have come a long way, they still have some catching up to do in terms of the performance division.
Furthermore, van Meel also remarked on the powertrain of the next BMW M3 and M4. There could either a petrol-powered or electric option but not both. This means Future M3 and M4 will not offer multiple powertrains. At the same time, BMW has not yet ruled out hybrid electrics.
Current-gen BMW M3 and M4
Today, BMW offers the higher-end BMW M3 and M4s with all-wheel drive and inline-six engines. These 3.0-litre twin-turbo engines develop 503 HP with a claimed 0-60 mph of 2.8 seconds. The top speed is 180 mph.
In comparison, the all-electric BMW i4 does 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 127 mph.
