Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale’s early design patents leak

The all-new Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale made its global debut in August 2023. Only 33 examples have been built with a price tag of $3.27 million each.

Now, every car goes through various design iterations before the final design is approved. Similarly, the design team at Alfa Romeo had created multiple designs for the new 33 Stradale. One such early iteration has leaked online via patent images.

The patent filings reveal a coupe design that’s similar to the production. However, it has unique design elements such as the C-shaped LED DRLs with vertically stacked LED headlamps, a sculpted hood and a more aggressive front splitter.

Moving to the side, the intakes on the rear fenders are unlike those seen on the production-spec car. That being said, the rear fascia does have some similarities to the final version. It has C-shaped LED taillights, dual centre exhausts and a diffuser.

Krystyna Perry, Head of PR at Alfa Romeo, told Motor1, “I can confirm that these images represent the 33 Stradale in its first 1:1 physical model’s design project. They date back to October 2022. This model design was patented in accordance with the Alfa Romeo Centro Stile procedure at that time. The procedure involves patenting the style of a project to protect the uniqueness of its design. Our process establishes a two-year duration for design patents, and upon expiration, we evaluate whether to renew them or not. Once the patent expires, the images can be made public.”

The 33 Stradale is powered by a twin-turbo V6 engine that develops 620 hp and is paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which drives the rear axle via an electronic limited-slip differential. Interestingly, the 33 Stradale is also available with an all-electric powertrain. The BEV setup generates over 750 hp and has a claimed range of 450 km (WLTP cycle). Both iterations are capable of delivering similar levels of performance. Alfa Romeo claims a 0-62 mph time of 3 seconds and a top speed of 206 mph.
