2024 Mercedes-AMG C63 dumps the V8 for a 4-cylinder hybrid
The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG used to be loved for its teutonic 6.2-liter V8 engine. Today, we live in a world that’s transitioning to green mobility, and the gas-guzzling V8 doesn’t really fit the bill.
For MY2024, the Mercedes-AMG C63 switches to a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. It might look puny on paper, but advancements in hybrid technology have enabled the boffins at Mercedes to extract 671 hp and 752 lb-ft of torque.
The 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 is complimented by a 204 hp electric motor mounted on the rear axle. More importantly, the internal combustion engine alone develops 476 hp, making it the most powerful 2.0-litre engine in the world!
The C63 also uses Formula 1-derived turbocharger technology. A small electric motor is nestled between the turbine and the compressor side of the turbo. The motor spins the turbo to create boost whenever required. A 9-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is paired with Mercedes’ 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system.
Thanks to all the clever tech, the new C63 S E Performance is said to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and can reach a top speed of 174 mph.
The 2024 Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance locks horns with the BMW M3 Competition. While both cars come with all-wheel drive, the M3 still uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbo 6-cylinder without any hybrid assistance.
