Coronavirus: Bentley temporarily shuts down Crewe factory

Bentley is the latest automaker to announce a closure of its factory due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Bentley has suspended production at its factory in Crewe, UK for four weeks, starting today. The company has said that production will resume on April 20, 2020.

Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and CEO of Bentley Motors, said: “The well-being of our colleagues is our number one priority and although this was a difficult decision to take, and doesn’t change our strategic direction, it was necessary to protect them as best we can during these unprecedented times. This will inevitably have an impact on our deliveries to customers, and we apologise for the inconvenience this causes, however we are working hard to minimize this disruption. Our thoughts continue to go out to all those affected around the world throughout this very sad and difficult time for so many people.’

However, core business functions will continue during the shutdown. Employees based in Crewe have been advised to follow social distancing policies or working remotely.

Bentley has already made operational changes at the company canteen and shops. The company gym facilities have been closed down. Important meetings are held over Skype or via video conference. Business trips to other countries have also been cancelled.

Ferrari, Lamborghini and Rolls Royce have also announced plant closures in the wake of the outbreak.
