2019 Geneva Motor Show: Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster Unveiled

This one is going to be a bit hard to get hold of as only 750 units of the Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster will be made available worldwide.

Who thought Mercedes-AMG will indulge us with a convertible version of its hardcore, track-focused, range-topping GT R coupe? Well, we could pretend to be all smug and say “Yeah, we saw that coming”. But, we didn’t see this happening at all. Which is why the 2019 Geneva Motor Show debut of the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster is a pure jaw-dropper.

Everyone usually associates roadsters with cruising. But the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster can do a lot more than delivering a sensational wind-in-your-hair experience to its occupants. They retained everything awesome about the ‘Beast of the Green Hell’ after chopping off the roof and gifting it with a fabric soft top.

So, the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that produces 577 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, mated with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is still there under that mile-long hood. Clocking 0-62 mph in 3.6 seconds and messing up your expensive hairstyle at 197 mph come as standard traits.

Being a hardcore convertible, the suspension setup and rear wheel steering system are conditioned to make the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster a pure attack beast on the track, very much like its hardtop sibling. Plus, there is loads of carbon-fiber inside and outside for those who love the light material on their performance cars. The extensive use of carbon-fiber has contributed to the stiffness of the vehicle, which is essential when coupes are transformed to a life of open-top driving.

Oh, and there is that rear wing which works with a carbon-fiber, active aero element cleverly hidden in the underbody in front of the engine to provide the necessary downforce to “suck” the car onto the road. The aero department of the GT R Roadster is pretty slick and is worth reading up on in the source link somewhere below.

“Okay, I’ve heard everything! How much do I have to pay for this?”: Well, Mercedes-AMG hasn’t disclosed the price yet. But, prepare to shell out a hefty sum over the GT R coupe’s $159,350 US price tag. You got to hurry as well since only 750 units will be made and we are speaking about global allotment here.

“I need more info on this thing before I rob the bank!”: Head over to the Daimler Global Media Site here for the elaborate press release.
