2016 NY Auto Show: Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

What happens when you put a Corvette Z06 engine in a Camaro? Well, you get a Chevy Camaro ZL1 and you will soon be able to buy one at your local Chevrolet dealership as the 2017 Camaro ZL1 debuts at the New York Auto Show this month.

Adding an enormous 6.2-liter V8 from the Corvette Z06 is like giving the Camaro a 640 hp heart transplant. The shockwaves are being felt in the Ford camp even as we speak as the ZL1 goes up against the mighty Ford Mustang GT350R.

The ZL1 can be differentiated from the slower 1LE by its sporty body kit which includes a front splitter and wide fenders. The interior feels equally sporty courtesy of a flat-bottom steering wheel wrapped in suede and a pair of Recaro bucket seats.

The engine produces supercar levels of performance with 640 lb-ft being delivered to the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission. Chevy also offers a 6-speed manual with rev-match for those looking for a more engaging experience. The chassis has been lightened by 200 lbs which should reflect in the handling. Furthermore, it has been developed at the Nurburgring.

Brembo supplies brakes for the ZL1 with 6-piston calipers on 15.35-inch rotors upfront and 4-piston units on 14.37-inch rotors at the rear. The 20-inch rims are shod with Goodyear Eagle F1s measuring 285 section in the front and 305 section in the rear.

The 2017 Chevy Camaro ZL1 gets all the kit you need to set the fastest lap around your local race track. An electronic limited-slip differential, magnetic ride control and traction control with drive mode selector and launch control- it’s all part of the standard package.
